Literatura e conhecimento

Abstract: It seems to be of general agreement that the type of written production which we call Literature is intellectually beneficial: reading literature brings intellectual and cognitive advantages. It is also widespread the opinion that, when we read Literature, we learn something. Even if we assent to these claims, there lingers a wealth of uncertainties concerning how this may be, and why it would matter to literary studies. The present article undertakes an introductory discussion of the relation between literature and knowledge. The following issues are addressed: is literature knowledge? Can it produce knowledge akin to that of Science and Philosophy? Can it teach it? Is it possible to claim that there are contents exclusive to literary formulation, which would be neither conveyed nor developed otherwise?

Keywords: Literature; knowledge; propositional knowledge.
